Reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy focusing mainly on the application of pressure on the feet and hands

Reflexology is a complementary ancient healing therapy dating back to Egypt and China. It is a safe natural way to heal the body.

It is the practice of application of hand and finger pressure to specific points on the feet or hands to stimulate the body’s own healing system and affect other parts and organs in the body. Reflexology encourages good health, promotes relaxation, eases pain and improves the quality of life. It acts as a stress reducer in the nervous system, promoting beneficial effects on the entire body, including the internal organs.

A reflexology treatment generally lasts for about one hour. You will be invited to lie on a comfortable treatment couch. Reflexology is a non-invasive, there is never any need for removal of clothing, apart from shoes and socks of course!

The theory underlying reflexology is called zone therapy, which is similar to the meridians in acupuncture. If any energy pathways are blocked reflexology aims to unblock them. Reflexology creates physiological, chemical and emotional changes throughout the body. During and after a reflexology treatment, the body begins progressively clearing blockages, re-establishing energy flows and balancing itself, resulting in better health.

Just as the foot has reflex points that correspond to the rest of the body, so does the hand. You can experience all of the potential wonderful benefits of reflexology through your hands.

Reflexology is one of the most popular types of complementary therapies for cancer patients. Research has shown its effectiveness at alleviating pain, relieving anxiety, lowers fatigue and eases nausea.  Clinics around the world recommend Reflexology as a support for medical fertility treatments like IVF. Reflexology is for all ages and can relieve a range of acute or chronic conditions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Reflexology the same as a foot massage?

Reflexology is not a foot massage. Initially your feet will be massaged a little to relax you, however the technique itself is about applying firm pressure to specific points on the foot. It is so much more than a foot rub.

Is Reflexology safe for everyone?

Reflexology is a safe and gentle therapy that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and health conditions. However, there are certain situations where reflexology may not be recommended or may need to be modified. For example, for those with a heart transplant. Specialist training is need for treating Pregnancy in the 1st Trimester, additionally it is contraindicated for those with deep vein thrombosis. Individuals with certain active foot conditions, infections or injuries like open wounds, scars,  or bruises may need to consult with the therapist before undergoing reflexology treatment.

What should I do before a session?

Come as your are! Wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoid heavy meals and alcohol for a few hours before.

What happens during a session?

Gentle to firm pressure will be applied to your feet and hands with thumbs and fingers, aiming to promote relaxation and balance by stimulating corresponding organs and systems in the body,  while you remain clothed.

The  nervous system is stimulated and it does the work of balancing and releasing; it is not the therapist who “fixes” discomfort. The goal is to bring the whole body into balance, and then the pain will subside.

Experiences with reflexology sessions can differ and usually there is a general feeling of relaxation, or a sense of “lightness” or tingling in the body, as well as feelings of warmth, a sense of “opening,” or “energy moving”

How will I feel afterwards?

Many people say they feel very relaxed and have a great sleep after Reflexology. Some say they have more energy while others say they feel very tired.

You may feel more emotional than usual. It is also quite common to go to the toilet more often.

Our response to Reflexology is very individual and it can also vary depending on how many treatments you have had.

Most major health insurance plans offer a refund on a portion of the treatment fees. The exact amount and number of sessions covered depend on your specific policy.
